You’ve probably heard the term “PNW” before—but if you’re not totally sure what it includes, here’s a quick breakdown. The Pacific Northwest usually refers to Washington and Oregon, and sometimes parts of Northern California and Idaho, depending on who you ask. It’s a region known for its mix of coastline, mountains, lakes, forests, and laid-back towns—all packed pretty close together. So if you’re looking for a place with a lot of variety in scenery (without needing to travel too far), the PNW is worth a spot on your elopement location list!

Why the PNW is the Perfect Place to Elope

There’s something about the Pacific Northwest that just works for elopements. It’s one of those places where you can drive an hour and feel like you’ve entered a completely different world, which means you get a lot of variety without a ton of travel. It really doesn’t matter if you want to say your vows by the ocean, on top of a mountain, in a forest, or near a quiet lake; it’s all doable here.

What I love most (and what many couples usually love too) is how easy it is to find a spot that feels breathtaking and private at the same time. In a lot of cases, you don’t have to hike ten miles or go totally off-grid to find a beautiful, quiet place to get married.

Legal Requirements (Making Your PNW Elopement Legit)

First things first: Let’s talk paperwork. It’s not the most fun part about eloping, but the good news is that it’s not too complicated in this region. Obviously, legal requirements will vary by state, but here’s a general breakdown of what you’ll need to know:

Washington:

• Marriage License: Apply online, in person, or by mail through any county. There’s a 3-day waiting period before you can use it, and the license is valid for 60 days.
• Witnesses: You’ll need two witnesses to sign your marriage certificate.
• Officiant: You need an officiant, but Washington allows a lot of flexibility. Friends or family can get ordained online to perform your ceremony legally.
• There is also an application fee of $170 (which can vary in amount from county to county).

Oregon:

• Marriage License: You can apply in any county by person or mail, and there’s a 3-day waiting period. The license is valid for 60 days.
• Witnesses: Oregon also requires two witnesses.
• Officiant: Like Washington, Oregon is pretty chill—officiants can be ordained online, and the state accepts that.
• The fee for your application can range from $50 to $75, depending on the county.

Northern California:

• Marriage License: You’ll need to apply at a California county clerk’s office—no waiting period, and the license is valid for 90 days.
• Public vs. Confidential License: California offers two types of marriage licenses:
  1.  A public license is the standard option that requires at least one witness to sign, becomes part of the public record, and can be used anywhere in the state.
  2. A confidential license doesn’t require any witnesses (which can be helpful if you’re planning something super private). However, you and your partner must be living together, and it can only be filed in the county where it’s purchased. This type of license is not part of the public record, which some couples really appreciate for privacy reasons.
• Officiant: California accepts online ordinations, too, so friends or chosen family can legally officiate. An officiant is required for both public and confidential marriages.
• The marriage license fee ranges from $50 to $125, depending on the county.

Idaho:

• Marriage License: No waiting period here! Apply at any county clerk’s office. The license is valid indefinitely if not used, and once used, it must be returned within 30 days.
• Witnesses: No witnesses are required.
• Officiant: Online-ordained officiants are allowed, and there’s room for flexibility here, too.
• The marriage license fee is around $30.

Permit rules vary depending on where you’re eloping. Here are a few common situations:

• National Parks (like Mount Rainier or Crater Lake) almost always require a special use permit for ceremonies, no matter how small. These can take a few weeks (or longer) to process and usually come with a fee.
• State Parks may or may not require a permit. Some only need one if you’re bringing in decor, chairs, or a photographer.
• National Forests or BLM Land often fly under the radar, but they sometimes still require a permit if you’re having a formal ceremony or gathering. It really depends on the ranger district and how strict they are.

Timing is key. Some locations only issue a few permits per day or per season, and they can go quickly, especially for popular spots. I always recommend reaching out to the park or land office at least 2–3 months in advance (earlier if you’re planning something in peak season or at a popular spot).

Here are a few easy tips to keep things sustainable and your environmental impact low:

• Stay on marked trails or solid surfaces like rock or sand, even for photos. Off-trail wandering can damage fragile plants or cause erosion.
• Pack out everything you bring in, including trash, food, and decor.
• Avoid confetti tosses, including biodegradable options. They can still be harmful to the environment and hard to clean up.
• Keep your group size in check, especially in smaller or more sensitive areas.
• Respect wildlife. After all, it’s their home!

2. Cannon Beach: Haystack Rock, soft sand, and a laid-back vibe make Cannon Beach a favorite coastal elopement spot. You can have a simple barefoot ceremony and then grab fish and chips afterward.
3. Smith Rock State Park: For something totally different, Smith Rock brings a desert-like landscape with big rock walls and wide-open views. It’s a little drier and warmer than the rest of Oregon, making it a solid choice if you’re eloping in the shoulder seasons.

1. Sawtooth Mountains: The Sawtooths are full of sharp peaks, clear lakes, and quiet trails—perfect if you’re into mountain backdrops without all the foot traffic. The area around Stanley makes a great base for exploring, with lots of options whether you’re up for a hike or want something more accessible.
2. Shoshone Falls: Taller than Niagara and especially powerful in the spring when the water levels are high, Shoshone is all-around impressive. There are viewing areas and picnic spots nearby, so it’s easy to plan a simple, meaningful ceremony without a big hike.
3. Hells Canyon: This canyon doesn’t always make the elopement shortlists, but it should. It’s one of the deepest river gorges in North America and feels wide open and peaceful. You can keep things simple and just stay near your elopement spot, or make it an extended trip and explore the area for a few days. Some couples even turn their lodging into part of the experience (for example, saying their vows on the deck of a secluded A-frame or taking getting-ready photos in a light-filled forest retreat). I’m not just saying this because I am a photographer. Hiring the right person can really make a huge difference in how your day feels and how you remember it. 

Elopements are different from traditional weddings in all the best ways, and that means you’ll want someone who gets that. You’re not just hiring someone to take pretty pictures; you’re bringing in a person who’s going to be with you for some of the most personal, emotional, and sometimes hilariously messy moments of your day. That’s why connection matters just as much as skill. Here’s what to look for in a PNW elopement photographer:

• Familiarity with the region: Do they know the terrain, the weather patterns, and the nuances of each spot? Can they guide you through permits or backup plans if a trail is closed?
• Experience with elopements: Not all wedding photographers are automatically a good fit for elopements. Look for someone who understands the slower pace, the intimacy, and the need to sometimes pivot when plans change.
• Inclusive values: Especially if you’re LGBTQIA+, you want someone who creates a safe, affirming space where you can fully be yourselves. Your photographer should celebrate who you are without question.

When looking for these vendors, try to find people who are experienced with elopements and who click with your values. At the end of the day, it’ll just feel better working with vendors who you feel a connection with—and those who wholeheartedly celebrate your love.

Factor in permits, lodging, outfits, vendors, and any travel costs (especially if you’re flying or renting a car). The Pacific Northwest is generally known for being progressive and LGBTQ+ friendly, especially in places like Seattle, Portland, and much of Northern California. You’ll find plenty of affirming vendors, inclusive communities, and outdoor spaces where you can exist comfortably. That said, no place is perfect. 

I like to remind couples that even in states that are known for being queer-friendly, you might still run into awkward encounters, unfortunately. And, on the flip side, you might also find unexpected celebration and support in places that lean more conservative. 

The key is to go where you feel comfortable, work with vendors who make you feel seen, and trust your gut. I always recommend doing a little research ahead of time, especially if you’re eloping somewhere more remote, and leaning into a community of folks (like me!) who can provide some helpful tips and support.
