As an LGBTQIA+ small wedding and elopement photographer from Minneapolis, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring the city’s vibrant and diverse offerings with countless couples. Minneapolis is an amazing place to fall in love, with its rich cultural scene, beautiful outdoor spaces, and welcoming community. Whether you’re planning your first date or looking for new ways to spend time with your partner, I’ve put together a guide that has a little something for everyone!

For a classic date night idea in Minneapolis, head to The Main Cinema, formerly known as St. Anthony Main Theater. Located in the St. Anthony Main area, this theater offers a mix of mainstream and indie films. You can start your evening with a stroll along the Mississippi River, then enjoy a cozy dinner at one of the nearby restaurants. The theater itself has a charming, vintage vibe, giving the subtle touch of romance you might be after. After the movie, you can even grab dessert or coffee at one of the local cafes.
For an intimate evening, head to the Dakota in downtown Minneapolis. This legendary jazz club combines incredible live performances with an excellent dinner menu, making it easy to enjoy an entire night in one place. The lineup features everything from jazz and blues to folk, soul, and nationally touring artists, so there’s always something different to experience. It’s the perfect spot if you’re looking for a slower-paced, romantic date night.
Icehouse is a unique venue that combines live music, delicious food, and a vibrant atmosphere. Located in the Whittier neighborhood, Icehouse hosts a variety of musical performances, from jazz and blues to indie rock. You and your partner can enjoy a delicious dinner or brunch while listening to live music, making for a memorable and entertaining date night.
Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater offers a unique date night experience that combines dining, bowling, and live entertainment all in one cozy venue. Start your evening with a meal from their menu, which features a variety of comfort foods and local favorites. After dinner, enjoy a fun game of bowling on their vintage lanes. To cap off the night, head to the attached theater to catch a live performance, which could range from comedy and theater to music and spoken word.
For a classic Minneapolis date night, spend an evening at the Guthrie Theater in downtown Minneapolis. One of the city’s most iconic performing arts venues, the Guthrie features everything from Shakespeare and classic plays to contemporary productions and world premieres. Even if you don’t catch a performance, it’s worth visiting for the architecture, the Endless Bridge overlooking the Mississippi River, and stunning city views. Pair your show with dinner in the Mill District for a memorable night together.
For art lovers, the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) is an awesome date spot. With an extensive collection that spans thousands of years and cultures, there’s always something new to discover. You can spend the afternoon wandering through the galleries, sharing your thoughts on the artwork, and enjoying each other’s company. The museum also often hosts special exhibitions and events, adding an extra layer of excitement to your visit. Best of all, general admission is free, making it an affordable date option!
Continuing with another idea for art lovers, the Walker Art Center is less than a 10-minute drive away from the Minneapolis Institute of Art (so you can even do them on the same day if your heart desires!). The Walker Art Center offers an extensive collection of contemporary art, including visual arts, performing arts, and moving image exhibitions. Admission is free every Thursday night from 5-9 pm and the first Saturday of every month. Plus, it’s known to host lots of queer events!

Lake Harriet is one of Minneapolis’ most beautiful outdoor spots, perfect for a romantic picnic. Pack a blanket, some delicious snacks, and a sparkling beverage or other drink of choice, and find a cozy spot by the lake. You can even rent a paddleboat or take a leisurely stroll along the walking paths. In the summer, the lake often hosts live music and movies, providing free entertainment for your date. It’s the perfect way to enjoy each other’s company while being away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Minnehaha Falls is a stunning natural landmark in Minneapolis, offering a perfect setting for a romantic outdoor date. You can take a leisurely hike along the trails, admire the 53-foot waterfall, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Pack a picnic to enjoy by the falls or visit the nearby Sea Salt Eatery for fresh seafood. In the winter, the frozen waterfall also creates a magical, fairy-tale-like atmosphere, so it’s worth checking out all year round!
The Midtown Greenway is a beautiful, car-free trail that runs through the heart of Minneapolis. Rent bikes and enjoy a scenic ride together, stopping at any points of interest along the way. The trail connects to numerous parks, lakes, and cafes, making it easy to make it your own personal choose-your-own-adventure.
If you’re looking for a peaceful escape without leaving the city, spend an afternoon at Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary in Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis. As the oldest public wildflower garden in the United States, it’s home to hundreds of native plant species, winding nature trails, and incredible birdwatching opportunities. Depending on the season, you’ll find blooming wildflowers, colorful fall foliage, or lush greenery that makes it easy to forget you’re still in the Twin Cities. It’s an especially great date idea if you both enjoy photography, nature, or simply slowing down together.
The Saloon is an LGBTQ+ bar in Minneapolis that has been a staple in our community for decades. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and lively events, it’s the perfect spot for a fun date night out. The Saloon has something for everyone, whether you’re into dancing, drag shows, or just enjoying a drink with your partner. They also often have themed nights and special events. Overall, it’s a great place to let loose and celebrate being you in a space that embraces diversity and inclusivity—and who doesn’t love that?
A Bar of Their Own is a queer-owned, woman-owned bar in Minneapolis that only plays women’s sports on their TVs. If you and your partner want to catch the next big game in a comfortable and inclusive atmosphere, this is the spot for you. While you’re there, you can enjoy their wide menu selection that features all the sports bar classics—nachos, burgers, other handhelds, and so much more. They also have a great selection of beers and cocktails!

Urban Growler Brewing Company, Minnesota’s first woman-owned microbrewery, is an excellent spot for a laid-back and enjoyable date night—and it’s LGBTQ+-owned! Located in St. Paul, this brewery offers a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that’s perfect for queer couples. Start your evening with a tour of the brewery to learn about their unique brewing process and the story behind their establishment. Afterward, sample a flight of their craft beers, which include a range of styles from IPAs to stouts.
LUSH Lounge & Theater is a vibrant and welcoming spot that offers a little bit of everything for a fantastic date night. Known for its lively drag shows, cabaret performances, and themed events, LUSH is a haven for the LGBTQ+ community in Minneapolis. Start your evening with some delicious sips and bites at their lounge, which features a menu of tasty comfort food and creative cocktails. For a fun and lively date night, head to Up-Down Minneapolis, an arcade bar featuring vintage arcade games, pinball machines, and a wide selection of craft beers. The rooftop patio is also a great spot to relax and enjoy a drink while taking in the city views.
For couples who love to cook (or want to learn), a cooking class at Cooks | Bellecour is a fun and interactive date idea. With a location in St. Paul and Minneapolis, this culinary school offers a variety of classes ranging from seasonal cooking to French pastries. Spend the evening learning new recipes and techniques together, then enjoy the delicious meal you’ve prepared. It’s a great way to bond and create lasting memories over a shared love of food.
If your ideal date includes great food and wandering without a strict plan, spend a morning at the Minneapolis Farmers Market near downtown Minneapolis. Open seasonally with dozens of local vendors, it’s a fun place to browse fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, local coffee, and handmade products while supporting Minnesota farmers and small businesses. Pick up ingredients for a picnic or cook dinner together afterward for an easy date that feels both relaxed and memorable.
Coffee dates are great, but tea dates deserve more attention. Northeast Tea House in Northeast Minneapolis offers a cozy atmosphere where you can slow down over expertly prepared matcha, loose-leaf teas, and traditional tea service. It’s a quieter alternative to a busy coffee shop and gives you plenty of time to actually talk and connect. If you’re looking for a low-key first date or a relaxing afternoon together, this is one of my favorite hidden gems in Minneapolis.
For a date that’s equal parts cozy and delicious, head to Dancing Bear Chocolate in Minneapolis. This local chocolate shop creates handcrafted chocolates and treats that are perfect for sharing (or keeping all to yourself!). Pick out something sweet together, grab a few treats to take home, or make it part of a larger date by pairing it with a walk around the neighborhood. It’s a simple but thoughtful way to slow down and enjoy the little moments together.
For an adventurous and active date, try indoor rock climbing at Vertical Endeavors. With locations in both Minneapolis and St. Paul, this climbing gym offers a variety of routes suitable for all skill levels.

After the show, you can explore the rest of the museum, which features exhibits on natural history and science.
For a beautiful date any time of year, head to the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory at Como Park in St. Paul. Whether you’re escaping a cold Minnesota winter or looking for a relaxing afternoon surrounded by greenery, it’s one of the most romantic places in the Twin Cities.
See the city from a different perspective with Minneapolis Trolley Tours. These guided trolley rides are a fun way to explore Minneapolis while learning more about the city’s history, landmarks, and hidden gems. Whether you’re longtime locals looking for something new or visiting the Twin Cities for a weekend getaway, it’s a unique date idea that lets you sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride together.
If you’re looking for a date that’s playful, quirky, and a little competitive, head over to Can Can Wonderland in St. Paul. This one-of-a-kind entertainment venue features an artist-designed indoor mini golf course, hundreds of arcade games, live performances, and a full bar and kitchen. Whether you’re challenging each other to mini golf, trying to beat each other’s arcade scores, or catching a comedy, drag, or live music show, it’s an easy place to spend an entire evening together.
If you and your partner enjoy hands-on activities, sign up for a pottery workshop at Northern Clay Center. This art center offers classes and workshops for all skill levels, providing a creative and engaging date experience. Learn the basics of pottery making and create your own unique pieces to take home. To make it even more special, try making something for each other. It’s a fun and artistic way to spend time together while trying something new!
If you’re looking for a date that gets you moving, head to Cinema Ballroom in St. Paul. This historic dance studio offers beginner-friendly lessons in everything from salsa and swing to ballroom, country, Latin, and social dancing. You don’t need any experience to join a group class, and learning something new together is a great way to laugh, connect, and maybe discover a new shared hobby. After class, grab dinner or drinks nearby to keep the date going.
If you and your partner love trying something new, check out Mess Hall Arts in Minneapolis. This community art studio hosts hands-on workshops throughout the year, including pottery, stained glass, painting, printmaking, candle making, fiber arts, and other rotating creative classes. Instead of the usual dinner date, you’ll leave with something you made together—a fun keepsake from your time together while supporting local artists.
Looking for something a little different? The American Swedish Institute in south Minneapolis regularly hosts workshops where couples can learn new skills together. Depending on the season, you might find Scandinavian baking classes, flower arranging, crafts, cooking, or other hands-on experiences. Before or after your workshop, wander through the beautifully restored Turnblad Mansion or enjoy coffee and pastries at FIKA Café for an extra cozy date.
For a creative twist on date night, visit Upstairs Circus in Minneapolis’ North Loop. Part DIY workshop and part cocktail bar, Upstairs Circus lets you choose from dozens of hands-on projects like leather goods, home décor, jewelry, and artwork while enjoying craft cocktails, mocktails, beer, or wine.
