One of the best things about eloping is that you can get really creative with your event space, whether indoors or outdoors. If you’re not drawn to large event spaces or (sometimes) busy national parks, this article is all about helping you discover unique, alternative venues that offer intimacy and personality.
I’ll also cover practical tips for finding these hidden gems, including how to ensure the venue matches your vibe and important things to keep in mind when deciding. My goal? To give you some inspiration and the tools you need to find the perfect venue that feels personal and special.
It might be a little self-explanatory, but an elopement venue is just the place for ‘doing’ your elopement. This could mean the spot where you say your vows or the spot you have your celebration (or both!). Since elopements are usually less than 30 people (or just the two of you), venues tend to be smaller and more intimate.
Unlike traditional wedding venues, elopement venues can be almost anywhere. A mountaintop at sunrise? Perfect. A cozy Airbnb? Absolutely. A city rooftop or a forest clearing? Yes and yes.
Some couples book official venues like boutique event spaces, while others choose outdoor locations like national parks, beaches, or even their own backyard. Indoor venues offer privacy and comfort (and climate control), while outdoor spots bring natural beauty and maybe even a bit of adventure. The best part? There are no rules. Your elopement venue should reflect you, your love story, and your vibe.
As I mentioned in my introduction, while elopement venues can technically be anywhere, my focus for this guide is to provide you with creative alternatives to outdoor national park elopements and traditional big event spaces.
Yes—because anywhere you elope is technically a venue. But that doesn’t mean you have to book a traditional event space or head to a national park. Your “venue” might be a scenic overlook, a quiet stretch of beach, or the coffee shop where you had your first date.
Before you start hunting for the perfect venue, it’s important to get clear on what you and your partner really want and need. Take some time to sit down together and dream about your ideal elopement. It might help to brainstorm and create a “wants vs. needs” list to really hone in on your priorities.
Once you’ve got your list, you’ll have a better sense of what matters most when it comes to your venue. Then, as you start looking at options, ask yourselves these questions:

As queer folks, we know that when it comes to choosing something as personal and intimate as the venue you’re going to get married in, it isn’t just about finding something that looks nice. Unfortunately, it’s also about finding a place that makes us feel safe, welcomed, and celebrated. With that, here are some other things to keep in mind when searching for an LGBTQ+-friendly elopement venue:
Finding the perfect elopement venue starts with knowing where to look! Here are some ways to discover unique spots for your big day:
The beauty of elopements is that anywhere can be your venue. But if you need inspiration for alternatives to national parks and traditional big venues, here are some of my favorite ideas!
Renting an Airbnb or Vrbo property is one of my favorite alternatives to traditional venues and national parks. There are so many options out there, and you’re bound to find a unique space that speaks to you and your partner. Many couples choose properties with intriguing interior designs or outdoor spaces for the ceremony. And, as a photographer, I can attest that these settings can make for epic photographs!
Keep in mind that not all Airbnbs or Vrbos allow parties on site. So, if you plan on inviting guests, check the restrictions before booking—the last thing you want is to have a stressful encounter with your host on your big day! To do so, Vrbo lets you conveniently filter your search by checking the “events allowed” box. For Airbnb, the property listing might say “no parties or events,” but it’s also a good idea to inquire directly with the hosts.

There are many bed and breakfasts out there that offer cozy, intimate spaces for your elopement. Again, you’ll need to inquire first to see if the space allows celebrations like elopements, especially if you have guests. The best perk of this option? You have accommodations and breakfast sorted in one place.
You can often find cute cabins on Airbnb and Vrbo, but you can also just search “cabin for rent” online to see what pops up. For those who like a private, outdoorsy feel, a secluded cabin could be just the vibe for you. Picture cozy interiors while surrounded by nature—perfect for an indoor or outdoor celebration.
Peerspace is a platform that allows you to browse a wide range of rentable spaces, from studios and warehouses to houses and unique rooms. This website can be an excellent way to find the most aesthetically pleasing spot to hold your elopement! You can usually rent these spaces by the hour. Some of the most unique ones I’ve encountered in my searches are historic buildings, plant shops, and lofts!
Unique Venues is similar to Peerspace in that you can browse different types of venues in your chosen area or filter by occasion to find unique elopement venues that speak to you. The listings range from spaces on university campuses and historic venues to theaters and entertainment centers.
When most people think of photo studios, they think of photoshoots. Yes, we’ll be taking photos at your elopement, but you can also host the entire ceremony there! There are some pretty cool spaces with different backdrops and aesthetics. So, if one catches your eye, this can be an excellent option for an intimate elopement experience while ensuring you’ll always have good lighting.
Another out-of-the-box idea: Inquire about hosting our elopement at your favorite local brewery. Many breweries have rentable spaces for special occasions. If this setting is your vibe, it can be the perfect way to say “I do” and celebrate with a pint afterward. Or, if you don’t want to host your vow exchange at the brewery, you can also consider planning the after-party there.
For those who want the city vibe while still getting the chance to be outdoors, you can consider renting an apartment with a patio. Or, if you already live in an apartment with a balcony, consider keeping your elopement close to home—literally! This option can be the perfect way to achieve that intimate feel that so many couples love about elopements.
Lofts are neat spaces typically made out of old industrial buildings. Common features include oversized windows, high ceilings, concrete floors, and often a main and loft level. Lofts can be cool options for couples looking for something aesthetically pleasing while accommodating a few guests.
For all the couples who love history, art, and culture, having your elopement at a museum or art gallery might feel a bit like a dream. Many people don’t actually realize that these sports often have dedicated event space. While renting out these spots for a small elopement might be possible, it’s important to inquire first to see if they have any guest minimums or other restrictions.
Okay, book lovers—this one’s for you. If you and your partner love the vibe of a bookstore, then you’ll be happy to know that it can be possible to have your elopement in one. Of course, like any other venue or space, you should inquire first to understand what is and isn’t possible and the restrictions in place. For example, Visible Voice Books is a bookstore and cafe in Cleveland, Ohio, that offers a Create-Your-Own night for renting out the space, inviting guests, and hosting your own celebration.
Maybe you and your love met in university, and you want that full circle moment of going back there to elope. Most universities have spaces available for rent. Many campuses also have beautiful outdoor areas that can make for stunning backdrops for your ceremony. Every university is different, so I recommend contacting them to discuss your options.
If you live in a city, there’s likely a botanical garden located nearby or just a short drive away. These gardens are perfect for special occasions, like your elopement. Often, you can choose from different areas, indoors or outdoors. Does a specific corner of the garden catch your eye? Do you like the look of that gazebo or fountain? And again, it’s best to inquire with the gardens to see how you can actually utilize the space.
You don’t have to be in Rome to find historic places to elope. Some spots across the country, like state parks, have old ruins that can make for beautiful places to hold your ceremony. Just remember to do your due diligence beforehand to ensure you can actually elope there. Also, take all measures possible to Leave No Trace and respect and preserve the area.
Similar to botanical gardens, except mostly indoors. If you love being surrounded by plants and flowers but want an indoor space, a greenhouse is a great choice. Many greenhouses offer rentals, giving you a nature-filled setting while keeping you sheltered from the weather.
For couples who enjoy a cozy, laid-back vibe and a good cup of coffee, a coffee shop can be the perfect place to elope. Whether it’s your favorite local café or a hidden gem, coffee shops offer a warm, intimate setting. Many places are happy to host small gatherings and can even work with you to create a personalized experience, like hosting you after hours.
If you’re looking for a cozy and unique spot, a treehouse can make your elopement feel a little magical. You can find treehouses available for rent on platforms like Airbnb, or even at resorts that specialize in them (yes, it’s a thing!).
Many estates, mansions, and historic sites often offer rental options for small weddings and elopements. Whether it’s a European-inspired villa or a historic countryside manor, these venues are usually full of character and give you a nice private, exclusive-like setting.
For couples who love the coast, a lighthouse elopement is both romantic and adventurous. Some lighthouses even allow ceremonies on-site, which (of course) are accompanied by stunning ocean views. You can often find these venues through a quick online search or a property rental platform like Airbnb.
If you love the city, but don’t want to be directly in the middle of the hustle and bustle, a rooftop elopement could be the way to go. Rooftop venues come in all shapes and sizes, from more luxurious setups to cute little gardens. No matter what you choose, this type of venue gives you a bit of that ‘on top of the world’ feeling, with a bit of privacy and quiet standing between you and the city below.
Imagine saying your vows on a calm lake, cruising through a bay, or even on deck with the sunset over the horizon. For couples who want to elope on the water, a boat rental offers a pretty unique experience, if I do say so myself. If you want to go for something a bit bigger, many private yacht charters even offer packages for small weddings and elopements.
For a fairytale-like setting, you can look into small cottages to fit that vibe. Think tucked away in the countryside, nestled in the woods, or perched near a quiet lake. You might even find that some of these rentals are specifically designed for elopements and small weddings, which means they might already have scenic ceremony spots scoped out, thoughtful amenities, or even elopement-friendly packages. One such example is Vaughan House in Forest, Virginia!
