One of the best things about eloping is that you can get really creative with your event space, whether indoors or outdoors. Many couples choose to have elopements or small weddings at traditional venues. Another route I frequently talk about is eloping outdoors in national parks.
But what other unique elopement destinations and ideas that couples like you can explore? To help you make your elopement special, I created a list of alternatives to eloping in traditional venues or national parks.
Renting an Airbnb or Vrbo property is one of my favorite alternatives to traditional venues and national parks. There are so many options out there, and you’re bound to find a unique space that speaks to you and your partner. Many couples choose properties with intriguing interior designs or a jaw-dropping outdoor space for the ceremony. And, as a photographer, I can attest that these settings can make for epic photographs!
Keep in mind that not all Airbnbs or Vrbos allow parties on site. So, if you plan on inviting guests, check the restrictions before booking—the last thing you want is to have a stressful encounter with your host on your big day!
Vrbo allows you to conveniently filter your search by checking the box, “events allowed.” For Airbnb, it’s often better to inquire directly with hosts instead of going through the Airbnb site. You can often find the host’s contact through a quick Google search, which could pull up their website or social media.
There are many bed and breakfasts out there that offer cozy, intimate spaces for your elopement. Again, you’ll need to inquire first to see if the space allows celebrations like elopements, especially if you have guests. The best perk of this option? You have accommodations and breakfast sorted in one place.
You can often find cute cabins on Airbnb and Vrbo, but you can also just search “cabin for rent” online to see what pops up. For those who like a private, outdoorsy feel, a secluded cabin could be just the vibe for you. Picture cozy interiors while surrounded by nature—perfect for an indoor or outdoor celebration.
Peerspace is a platform that allows you to browse a wide range of rentable spaces, from studios and warehouses to houses and unique rooms. This website can be an excellent way to find the most aesthetically pleasing spot to hold your elopement! You can rent these spaces by the hour. Some of the most unique ones I’ve encountered in my searches are historic buildings, plant shops, and lofts!
Unique Venues is similar to Peerspace in that you can browse different types of venues in your chosen area or filter by occasion to find unique elopement destinations that speak to you. The listings range from spaces on university campuses and historic venues to theaters and entertainment centers.
When most people think of photo studios, they think of photoshoots. Yes, we’ll be taking photos at your elopement, but you can also host the entire ceremony there! There are some pretty cool spaces with different backdrops and aesthetics. So, if one catches your eye, this can be an excellent option for an intimate elopement experience while ensuring you’ll always have good lighting.
Another out-of-the-box idea: Inquire about hosting our elopement at your favorite local brewery. Many breweries have spaces for rent on special occasions. If this setting is your vibe, it can be the perfect way to make your elopement uniquely yours! Or, if you don’t want to host your vow exchange at the brewery, you can also consider planning the after-party there.
For those who want the city vibe while still getting the chance to be outdoors, you can consider renting an apartment with a patio. Or, if you already live in an apartment with a balcony, consider keeping your elopement close to home—literally! This option can be the perfect way to achieve that intimate feel that so many couples love about elopements.
Lofts are neat spaces typically made out of old industrial buildings. Common features include oversized windows, high ceilings, concrete floors, and often a main and loft level. Lofts can be cool options for couples looking for something aesthetically pleasing while accommodating a few guests.
For all the couples who love history, art, and culture, having your elopement at a museum or art gallery might feel a bit like a dream. Many people don’t actually realize that these institutions often have dedicated event space. While renting out these spots for a small elopement might be possible, it’s important to inquire first to see if they have any guest minimums or other restrictions.
Okay, book lovers—this one’s for you. If you and your partner love the vibe of a bookstore, then you’ll be happy to know that it can be possible to have your elopement in one. Of course, like any other venue or space, you should inquire first to understand what is and isn’t possible and the restrictions in place. For example, Visible Voice Books is a bookstore and cafe in Cleveland, Ohio, that offers a Create-Your-Own night for renting out the space, inviting guests, and hosting your own celebration.
Maybe you and your love met in university, and you want that full circle moment of going back there to elope. Most universities have spaces available for rent. Many campuses also have beautiful outdoor areas that can make for stunning backdrops for your ceremony. Every university is different, so I recommend contacting them to discuss your options.
Many cities have at least one showstopping botanical garden. These gardens are perfect for special occasions, like your elopement. Often, you can choose from different areas, indoors or outdoors. Does a specific corner of the garden catch your eye? Do you like the look of that gazebo or fountain? Inquire with the gardens to see how you can make your elopement visions a reality.
You don’t have to be in Rome to find historic places to elope. Some spots across the country, like state parks, have old ruins that can make for beautiful places to hold your ceremony. Just remember to do your due diligence beforehand to ensure you can actually elope there. Also, take all measures possible to Leave No Trace and respect and preserve the area.
First and foremost, deciding what you want and need for your elopement is essential. Start by sitting down with your partner to brainstorm all your dreams. Consider creating a “wants and needs” list. From this list, you can pinpoint your priorities when it comes to elopement locations.
As you begin searching for the suitable spaces, ask yourself these questions:
Understanding your needs while weighing specific locations against these questions can help you assemble a list of quality contenders.
The best place to start when looking for cool elopement places is to do a quick Google search. Start with something like “unique elopement venues in [insert your location]” and see what pops up. Or, if you already know what direction you want to take for this big day, you can go directly to specific websites, like Airbnb, Vrbo, Peerspace, or Unique Venue.
As you come across spaces that pique your interest, save them and write down some notes, including what you like about it, the pros and cons, the cost, and any restrictions. Once you have a solid list, you and your partner can narrow your choices based on your needs.
As a photographer, I’ve helped many couples plan their elopements. Picking the ideal location can be daunting, and sometimes, it helps to have a second opinion. Lucky for you, I can offer insight into location logistics and photography recommendations!
